Mercy for the Memories – Geoff Moore/Sojourn Chords

Tuesday, September 29, 2009 9:53 pm

So back in the day I saw this local christian band called Sojourn play at a church in River Falls, WI. I ended up buying their cassette tape. I loaned it to this roller rink I used to go to (Wooddale Rec Center in Woodbury, MN) and never got it back. Anyway, they covered a Geoff Moore song called “Mercy for the Memories” which is based on Psalm 103/Jeremiah 31:34 with an acoustic guitar. I LOVED that song and played the tape over and over.
Anyway, Out of the blue I was humming it today. I looked on iTunes for Sojourn but it looks like the only band with that name released stuff this decade. the band I saw was in the 80′s. I did buy the Geoff Moore version off iTunes but it’s not as good. I searched the internet for tabs or chords for this song but I couldn’t find any. I tabbed out a really basic version after hearing this song for the first time in 15 or so years…

Verse 1
G                      D
Can you hear me broken hearted

Em                        C
All you prisoners of your past

G                  D          C
Come and find your freedom at last

G                      D
There is mercy for the memories

Em                    C
That hold you in your pain

G                     D
Come and stand in the cleansing

C
Of forgiving rain

Chorus
D                           C           G
For as far as the eastern sky is to the west

C                  D               G
And as deep as the ocean's deepest depths

C                 D           G        D            Em
Your sin has been carried by a God who forgives and forgets

C                       D            G
Come find mercy for the memories and rest

Verse 2
G                     D
All you hiding in the shadows

Em                  C
Of innocence you've lost

G                  D
Come and find your healing

C                   D
In the shadow of the cross

Chorus

Body Pump 64 Songs/Tracks and Early Comments

Friday, November 23, 2007 2:24 pm

Word on the street is that BP64 sucks bad. It’s getting slammed in the message boards. Apparently all the music is bad. Ab track is identical to 63. They moved the extra weight to the bicep track and you add it mid-way instead of starting with it (like the current chest track). They’re calling it pyramids but its not a true pyramid, just extra weight.

The only thing I heard that I liked is that they changed up the predictable choreography. You know how its always on the verse 4′s, then 2′s, then 3×1′s, then singles on the chorus? For *every* muscle group??! Apparently now on the chorus its always up 2, down 2, single, single, single, single and keeps repeating like that. I guess thats cool. I haven’t yet seen the disc or gotten to try it myself so I’ll reserve judgment and pray that it’s not as bad as it sounds. Anyhow… here’s the track list with links to the songs…

Track List

1. Walk Away (Tony Moran, Warren Rigg Evolution Mix) – Tony Moran feat Kristine W

2. More Than A Feeling – rockout!!!

3. In Love With You – Freestylers

4. See The Light (Original Mix) – Paradise

5. Hungry – INXS

6. Hey Everybody (feat Kurtis Blow and Max C) – Bomfunk MC’s

7. The Sun Always Shines On TV – Milk Inc

8. Keep Your Hands Off My Girl – Good Charlotte

9. Here Comes The Hotstepper – Ini Kamoze

10. Hurt – Christina Aguilera

The YouTube Effect

Monday, October 8, 2007 10:59 pm

Lots of people have checked out YouTube to watch clips or whatever. Not everyone is familiar with the viral “YouTube” effect which is where the true power of social networking shines.

Say you have a small time musician just trying to get a big break. She records a video of herself with a song she wrote….

This video gets popular on YouTube. Pretty soon another musician takes it and adds his own style to it by recording a drum and guitar backing track to the original video….

The original artist thinks it’s a great idea and asks for more contributions from the fans to make a music video…

The work gets noticed as the fan base grows, and an actual professional video is produced with a full band, notoriety is gained, and the artist has a popular single…

And that folks, is the “YouTube” effect!

Events and Adventures Singles Club Review

Wednesday, September 5, 2007 4:38 pm

So you’ve heard that ad on the radio for a company called Events and Adventures? Me too. They say they organize fun events that singles can show up to and get to know other singles in their area. I’m single at the moment so I thought I’d call them up and find out what it was all about. On-line dating isn’t really my thing, and if you’re on my friends list you already know what kinds of girls I meet on my own :-P So to sum up I was ready for something different.

Anyway I went to their website first. Not much info and mostly stock photos (you can tell – amateur snapshots of real events don’t have proper lighting and makeup) . The events calendar they have hasn’t been updates since May 2007. Not impressive. They have a form you can fill out to get more info. I assumed they would just email me something. Right away someone calls me. First off, they tell me it’s a singles club (but not a dating service) and they are selective about who they let join. They subjected me to a barrage of fairly personal questions right off the bat.

Note that this is paraphrased and not verbatim. But it was such an odd conversation and happened extremely recently so it still stands out.

Them: Are you single?
Me: Yes
Them: Ever Married?
Me: No
Them: Any kids?
Me: No
Them: What kind of job do you have?
Me: Operations manager at a large bank
Them: Oh that sounds like a great job!
Them: Would you say you are responsible with your finaces?
Me: huh?! Yes!
Them: Do you have a major credit card in your name?
Me: Several, why?
Them: Do you….
Me: Wait a second. What is the deal with these questions?
Them: Well we are a fairly selective club. We want to ensure all of our members are high quality singles. We want to make sure we have fun personable people with no baggage. Is that a problem?
Me: Well that sounds ok I guess (I was buying the explanation at this point)
Them: Just so you feel secure, we do a background check of all of our new members. We also check county records for marriages. This ensures everyone at our events is a high caliber single.
Them: Well you sound like a pretty good guy, but of course we’ll have to meet you in person to share the details, and make sure you have good social and grooming skills. (this was another what???!?!? for me) Are you familiar with the Saint Louis Park area? We have a new member center over there.
Me: Wait a second, you haven’t really told me anything about your club or your events or costs or anything. I’m looking for more information. What types of events do you put on?
Them: All kinds of events, you’re sure to find something that interests you.
Me: What is the cost?
Them: It varies by events, but generally we handle all of the cost of the event as well as the setup or cleanup. If there are optional items available as part of the event (such as food or beverage) that would be your only cost.
Me: Ok, and how much to join the club?
Them: Well first we have to make sure you are the type of person that would fit in with out members. When can we schedule a personal interview with you?

At this point I made up some story about being busy and that I would call back to setup a time.

After the initial phone call they have called 17 additional times and counting. Each time its someone different calling asking if anyone has contacted me yet to give me information about the club. Don’t they know I already talked to someone???

Anyhow. This all smelled of a timeshare like setup. So I googled a bunch for the price. Turns out it costs $1,600 per year, plus $25/month with a 1 year minimum commitment. Note that pretty much all the reviews I found speak of high pressure sales pitches at the personal interview.

I’m glad I bailed out while I did. I called them back and was very polite. I told them I was no longer interested and they promised to stop calling.

We’ll see….

Update 9-6-07

Yeah, they called again…. *sigh*

DTV4PC Review Update

4:34 pm

Just to follow-up, pretty much immediately after writing the review below I’ve been trying to get my money back as part of their “30 Day Money Back guarantee”. To date there have been no responses to my emails asking to pursue a refund. Just thought you’d like to know…

DTV4PC Review

Thursday, August 2, 2007 10:46 pm

Spam Today

So I got an email from Farstone in my inbox today. I had bought some other software from them quite some time ago and still get spam from them. Today’s email was kind of intriguing though. It describes a new product called Digital TV for PC (DTV4PC).

I checked out their “live demo” which is a live feed of CNN. The quality looked good. It was clearly webcast quality but appeared to be high bitrate and looked pretty decent. I then googled for reviews and couldn’t find a single one. I thought it might be fun to plop down the cash and be the first to take a crack at it.

The website advertises over 1,000 channels available for your viewing. They claim this is 100% legal. It loosk to me to be legit. It seems that they are just aggregating existing free feeds into a Windows front end.

PS – Yes I know this is why spammers exist, because every once in a while someone (like me today) will bite. Sorry in advance…

What content is available?

Channels can be sorted many ways such as most popular, by genre, by country, etc. I chose to first view the channels based here in America. At the time of this review, 334 (323 unique) USA channels are listed. Breaking this down:

4 of these are weather channels (including the actual “The Weather Channel”)

There are 2 travel channels. One is a no name, the other is GlobeTrekker TV.

17 channels are sports related. Both ESPN and ESPN Sports are listed as choices in the channel browser but I have not yet been able to connect to these channels. One of the MLB channels is listed and did work. Also one interesting channel of note in this category is the “Backyard Wrestling Network” which although seems to be an amateur produced “channel” it was fairly hilarious to watch.

11 of the channels are shopping related (read QVC and Home Shopping Network)

11 of the channels are religious programming of the UHF and Sunday morning infomercial variety.

There is a single channel in the “Reality” category which was just playing video tapes of local rap shows every time I tuned in.

9 of the chnnels are in the politics genre. All of these are local government cable access feeds.

33 of the channels are in the news category. The worthwhile ones here are live feeds of BBC, CNN, CSPAN, CNBC, Sky news, and Bloomberg. The rest are local news channels consisting of the alternate programming on HDTV channels. ABC news now is also available (sort of like on-demand). It’s not actually a channel but a news summary that starts playing from the beginning when you select this channel.

There is a single channel in the “nature” category. I was only able to briefly connect to this channel but it appeared to just be a webcam pointing out into a park or possibly a yard.

There are 34 audio only channels. It’s the same fare you get on cable, satellite, or XM radio.

6 channels are in the “movies” category. All of them are no names. Though the “horror channel” did sound interesting, I was never able to connect to it.

4 channels occupy the “lifestyle” genre. One of them was broadcasting an interview with a farmer talking about how to increase yields (on the country channel). The lifestyle channel was playing an into to prenatal yoga video.

There are 2 channels in the comedy category. Both were no names. One was broadcasting shows from tv.com.

19 of the channels are listed as “government”. These are rebroadcasts of local government cable access feeds.

107 channels are in the general category. Any of you have an OTA (over the air) HDTV receiver to pick up local HD stations? You know how a lot of local stations will broadcast non-stop weather or repeats of their newscasts on their alternate HDTV channels? A lot of these are rebroadcasts of that same OTA programming. Some interesting things in this category are “Tom Green Live!” (non stop Tom Green comedy), NASA TV is here, other wacky stuff is in here that appears to be local tv stations that are fairy low budget.

There are 3 gamer channels. One’s description said it showed live on-line gaming. I wasn’t able to connect to it though. the other two were not in english and one repeatedly would go to re-buffer the stream.

There are 5 in the finance category. Bloomberg and CNBC are repeated here (they also appear in the news category).

11 appear in the entertainment category. “The Sci-Fi channel” is listed but it’s not the one you know from cable, satellite, or scifi.com

38 channels are listed in the educational category. 3 different NASA TV channels appear (1 is a dup previously listed). A live webcam from monterey bay aquarium is a channel as well. “The earth channel” wasn’t too bad. It even borders on actually being worthwhile. Appeared to be a knockoff of PBS Nova or The discovery channel.

4 channels are listed in the cartoon category, including “The cartoon network”. Alas, this is also a knock off and not the actual “Cartoon Network”. The knockoff was playing very old no-name cartoons with an occasional old Bugs Bunny thrown in.

1 Comedy channel is listed. It was a no name as well but wasn’t too bad. Appeared to be showing tapes of recorded performances from local comedy clubs.

Note that some of the other things listed on the website (such as MTV) are available from other countries. For example the only MTV channel available is from New Zealand. So if you want to see the latest hit videos from down under and watch VJ’s with accents you can tune in. Don’t expect to see any of the popular stuff from America here though. The CBC is available in Canada.

How’s the picture and sound quality?

Now I can see why they chose CNN as their demo channel. There is very little movement and the audio is primarily human speech. This eliminates most picture artifacts as there is no fast action and allows more of the bandwidth to go to video since there isn’t much in the way of audio.

I suppose I should let you know I am on a DSL line from Qwest. I am paying for 1.5 down/768 up but according to dslreports I am actually getting almost 2 down and 896 up.

On some channels I was never able to connect (see ESPN in particular) and on a few others I was constantly buffering and the stream would stall. In my informal, non-scientific review I would estimate roughly 15% of the channels gave me trouble. The vast majority of the working channels streamed well. There was no rebuffering or hiccups.

The quality was exactly that of any video you’d find on a news website. Go to cnn.com and watch one of their videos. That’s pretty much what you’re in for. Looks ok in a window. Looks horrible full screen.

The program itself

It’s a 14 meg download. There is very little configuration aside from selecting a color scheme or skin. The channel list is sortable and searchable. You can bookmark channels you find interesting to a custom channel list. Basically it looks very much like a stripped down version of Windows media player. Installed easily. Didn’t put in any spyware that I have yet been able to detect.

Summary

So in summary, what is available that the average person might have heard of? Well CNN, Bloomberg, CSPAN, CNBC, NASA TV, ESPN (if it ever works) and BBC. The interesting finds I found? Pretty slim. The Earth Channel and Backyard Wrestling Network were kind of fun.

So it boils down to, would you pay $29.95 for a Windows-only program that would allow you to watch low-quality versions of these channels on your PC? Available at: http://www.dtvforpc.com

***Update 5/31/2008*** Just hit 25,000 views on this blog post this morning. Thanks to everyone for the comments. I think we’ve saved people some serious money!

Vacation Day 2

Tuesday, July 10, 2007 10:38 pm

Took another lazy day today. Completed and turned in all of my financial aid paper work at school. Got a massage at FiveTwoSix too. Took a nap. Went to the Y for Bodypump. Another relaxing day. I have no idea what I’m going to do tomorrow though!

First day on vacation…

Monday, July 9, 2007 11:51 pm

So I finally took some time off of work. Not really anything in particular going on since I couldn’t find anyone to go to Spain with me. Made the best of it though, got a haircut, went to the Science Museum and saw the Pompeii exhibit and an Imax movie. I downloaded the audio tour for the exhibit ahead of time and listened to it on my iPod while I was there. It was a really cool exhibit. There was this cute girl in line behind me with a little boy. She was telling him how they were going to see a movie about Greece. He gets all excited and starts saying the words from the John Travolta song. She says, no no no, not Grease but Greece. She spent about 5 minutes trying to get him to understand. It was fairly hilarious. Later, I went treasure hunting at thrift stores and found a brand spanking new (still in box!) 26 year old vintage Commodore C-16 computer for $4 bucks. The box is kind of beat up but inside the PC is still in it’s original sealed package. Haven’t had a chance to play with it yet. Also just downloaded the new Smashing Pumpkins record that came out today. iTunes had a bunch of bonus tracks that went with it. Just now started listening to it…
