Mercy for the Memories – Geoff Moore/Sojourn Chords

Tuesday, September 29, 2009 9:53 pm

So back in the day I saw this local christian band called Sojourn play at a church in River Falls, WI. I ended up buying their cassette tape. I loaned it to this roller rink I used to go to (Wooddale Rec Center in Woodbury, MN) and never got it back. Anyway, they covered a Geoff Moore song called “Mercy for the Memories” which is based on Psalm 103/Jeremiah 31:34 with an acoustic guitar. I LOVED that song and played the tape over and over.
Anyway, Out of the blue I was humming it today. I looked on iTunes for Sojourn but it looks like the only band with that name released stuff this decade. the band I saw was in the 80′s. I did buy the Geoff Moore version off iTunes but it’s not as good. I searched the internet for tabs or chords for this song but I couldn’t find any. I tabbed out a really basic version after hearing this song for the first time in 15 or so years…

Verse 1
G                      D
Can you hear me broken hearted

Em                        C
All you prisoners of your past

G                  D          C
Come and find your freedom at last

G                      D
There is mercy for the memories

Em                    C
That hold you in your pain

G                     D
Come and stand in the cleansing

C
Of forgiving rain

Chorus
D                           C           G
For as far as the eastern sky is to the west

C                  D               G
And as deep as the ocean's deepest depths

C                 D           G        D            Em
Your sin has been carried by a God who forgives and forgets

C                       D            G
Come find mercy for the memories and rest

Verse 2
G                     D
All you hiding in the shadows

Em                  C
Of innocence you've lost

G                  D
Come and find your healing

C                   D
In the shadow of the cross

Chorus
